Trainee Ship Manager

Location - Glasgow

Salary - DOE

Education and Experience

  • Seagoing experience as OOW or a degree in a maritime-related field.

  • Other relevant training, qualifications and experience as determined by the General Manager.

  • Purchasing Systems (desirable);

  • Budget Generation and Control (desirable);

  • Risk Assessment and Root Cause Analysis Training (desirable);

  • Vetting Training (if required).


While ultimately responsible to the General Manager, the Trainee Ship Manager shall work under the general direction of the Fleet Manager.

  • Assist the Operations Department in monitoring and/or controlling all matters relevant to the commercial operation of the vessel(s) e.g. Instructions to Master, Agents, Cargo Bunkers;

  • Assist in coordinating the preparation of the vessel’s detailed annual budget and the subsequent control of the operational costs, ensuring that clients are notified immediately of any actual or potential variation;

  • Assist in coordinating the preparation and timely submission to clients of all financial and operational reports required under the management agreement;

  • Ensure that vessel’s trading certificates are valid at all times including initial issue and renewal of Insurance Certification as appropriate;

  • Act as a member of the Emergency Response Team in the event of a contingency;

  • Assist with Fleet Itinerary updates on a weekly basis.


  • Good telephone manner and communication skills;

  • Good computer and administration skills with the working knowledge of Microsoft Office package;

  • Good geographical awareness;

  • Knowledge of spreadsheets (desirable);

  • Computer Literate (desirable).
